Critical overview of the process of identity formation of the majority and of minorities in Japan, with an analysis of the idea of »homogenous Japan« that resulted in conflicts with minorities. Through a theoretical review of the concepts of culture, identity and nation, and of family, gender, body and class, students gain insight into contemporary Japanese society and form anthropological interpretations of Japanese society and culture. Selected themes of Japanese culture and contemporary life-styles.
