The subject is divided into two parts: the first part is an introduction to medical anthropology, followed by cross-cultural comparisons of health, illness and healing/curing practices.
The subject deals with some of the key themes: (1) body, health, illness and healing/curing practices as culturaly/socialy mediated phenomena; (2) institutional development of Western medicine from the Middle Ages until today and its impact on different cultural environment; (3) theoretical and methodological approaches to healing in the »traditional« medicines (examples from Europe, Latin America and Asia), as well as complementary medicines (examples of some complementary medicines practices in Slovenia); (4) medical pluralism, as well as presentation of health institutions, within which operate different medical systems; (5) selected concepts from cross-cultural psychiatry; (6) new genetics, new reproductive technology and ethical dilemmas; (7) contemporary migration through the optics of medical anthropology; (8) Western medicine and the growing social stratification in the world.
During the tutorial hours, students will conduct independent fieldwork research among users or/and healers/doctors in different medical systems or/and institutions.
