British Romantic and Victorian Poetry

Introduction to scansion and versification with an overview of the literary periods, authors and selected works of British poetry of the 19th century. Students read and interpret individual poetic works in order to understand the main stages of the development of the English poetic expression through Romanticism and the Victorian Age, while also becoming acquainted with British society, history, political and economic characteristics of the periods addressed. The course focuses on the study of prosody and formal elements of poetry, in particular its structural principles, metrical and syntactical rhythm, sound and rhyme, stanzaic organization and the use of figurative language.
